Those found in violation of the law the first time will be fined
$50, which is waived upon proof of possession of an approved seat.
The fine for subsequent violations is $100.
Children with physical disabilities that prevent the use of standard
safety seats are exempt from the provisions of the law if the
disability is duly certified by a physician.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's web site at
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/portal/site/nhtsa/ has plenty
of additional information relating to child safety seats, including
a usage chart (which includes weight considerations) and a One
Minute Safety Seat Checklist.
PLEASE NOTE: It is nationally recommended that all children
age 12 and under ride in the back seat.
Anyone wishing to have a car seat installed or a safety check
performed or for further information should call the Wood River
Fire Department at 618-259-0984 and schedule an appointment.

Facts about CPR
-
Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of
death in adults. Most arrests occur in persons with underlying
heart disease.
-
CPR doubles a person's chance of survival from
sudden cardiac arrest.
-
75% of all cardiac arrests happen in people's
homes.
-
The typical victim of cardiac arrest is a man
in his early 60's and a woman in her late 60's.
-
Cardiac arrest occurs twice as frequently in
men compared to women.
-
CPR was invented in 1960
-
There has never been a case of HIV transmitted
by mouth-to-mouth CPR.
-
In sudden cardiac arrest the heart goes from
a normal heartbeat to a quivering rhythm called ventricular
fibrillation (VF). This happens in approximately 2/3rds of all
cardiac arrests. VF is fatal unless an electric shock, called
defibrillation, can be given. CPR does not stop VF but CPR extends
the window of time in which defibrillation can be effective.
-
CPR provides a trickle of oxygenated blood to
the brain and heart and keeps these organs alive until defibrillation
can shock the heart into a normal rhythm.
-
If CPR is started within 4 minutes of collapse
and defibrillation provided within 10 minutes a person has a
40% chance of survival.

Juvenile
Fire Setters Intervention
Matches or lighters in the hands of a child can have serious
consequences. Children in every category under the age of eighteen
are responsible for hundreds of fires and millions of dollars
in damage each year. Anytime a child plays with fire the results
can be unpredictable, even deadly.
Any fire department should make fire prevention its number one
priority and fire setter intervention can be a valuable tool in
achieving that goal. Any type of child fire play has the potential
for disaster and should never be ignored. Contact your fire department
and ask for help in dealing with the matter. Or to learn more
about the dangers of child fire play contact the Youthful Fire
setters
Intervention Association for further information.
INTERVENTION
Since 1991 the Wood River Fire Department has included Fire
setter
Intervention as part of its fire prevention arsenal. Unlike a
classroom setting, a one on one, parent/child, intervention with
firefighters has the childs undivided attention. This format
also provides the opportunity to expand into other areas such
social behaviors, interaction with peers and making good life
decisions to name a few.
WHO NEEDS INTERVENTION
Any child under the age of 18 who shows more than normal curiosity
or fascination with fire should be considered. Any child under
the age of 18 who has been careless or reckless with fire play
should be automatic. Or any child who has acted out in anger and
started a fire of any kind is in definite need. Again prevention
is the key, The idea is to get help and intervention before something
bad happens or that little fire play turns into a full blown incident.
CONTACT INFORMATION
Children cannot be forced into fire setter intervention, except
in probation cases. A parent or guardian must take the first step
to first recognize a need and next seek the proper help. You can
get help by contacting this fire department at 618-259-0984 or
a statewide toll free hotline at 1-800-446-1589. This is a free
resource provided to this community by your fire department.
